Car wash or detailing in Kathmandu: which one do you need?

A quick wash and a full detail are not the same thing. What each one includes, how often to do them in Kathmandu's dust, and what to ask before you pay.

Kathmandu is hard on paint: fine dust all dry season, mud and acidic rain in the monsoon, and plenty of sun on top. A regular wash keeps the surface clean. A proper detail protects it. Knowing which one you actually need saves money.

Wash, polish, detail

Basic wash
Exterior rinse, shampoo and dry, plus wheels and a quick interior vacuum
Wash and wax
A basic wash followed by a protective wax layer on the paint
Polish
Removes light scratches and swirl marks from the paint, then protects it
Full detail
Deep clean of the interior and exterior, usually with polish and protection

A wash removes dirt. Polishing actually corrects the paint, and takes real skill and time. A detail is a longer, more careful job, and is worth it once or twice a year, or before selling a car.

How often

  • Wash: every one to two weeks, more often in the monsoon or if you park under trees.
  • Wax or protection: every few months, depending on the product used.
  • Interior clean: every month or two for vacuuming, and a deep clean once or twice a year.
  • Full detail: once or twice a year, or when the paint has dulled or the interior smells.

What to ask before you book

  1. What exactly is included? Ask for the list, especially for interior work, engine bay and underbody.
  2. What products will be used? Not all "ceramic" or "teflon" coatings are what they claim to be, so be wary of big promises about how long they last.
  3. How long will it take? A real detail takes hours, not minutes.
  4. Where is the work done? At your home, so you can see what is happening, or in the workshop?
  5. Is the water or foam safe for your car? Electrical parts and engine bays should be protected.

Bikes too

Bikes benefit from the same ideas: wash off mud and dust first, keep the chain clean and lubricated, and polish and protect the tank and plastics. The monsoon is the time to be strict about drying and lubricating.

Providers on Najik can wash and detail vehicles at your home or office. Describe the vehicle and what you want, and a coordinator confirms the scope for your area before anyone is sent. Available in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur, and you pay the provider directly after the work is done.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash my car in Kathmandu?

Every week or two in the dry, dusty season, and after heavy rain or mud. Park under cover when you can.

What is the difference between polishing and waxing?

Polishing removes a thin layer to correct scratches and dullness. Wax adds a protective layer on top. You polish occasionally and wax more often.

Is ceramic coating worth it?

It can help paint stay cleaner and last longer, but results depend on the product and the preparation. Ask what is included and what warranty applies, and be wary of exaggerated claims.

Can my car be washed at home?

Yes, many providers wash at your location. Mention that you want it done at home when you call.
