Start before the first heavy rain
Monsoon damage in the Valley usually starts small: a blocked roof outlet, a hairline crack on the terrace, a junction box that lets water in. Each is a quick job in the dry weeks before the rain, and an expensive one after a storm.
These seven checks cover what goes wrong most often. You can do some yourself; for the rest, book a specialist early, because everyone else will be calling in Asar.
Seven jobs to do before the rains
-

Clear roof outlets and gutters
Leaves, plastic and dust block terrace outlets over winter. Clear them, pour a bucket of water through, and make sure it runs away from the walls.
- Who
- You, or a labourer
- Time
- Under an hour
-
Check terrace and roof waterproofing
Look for cracks, lifted tiles and dark patches on the ceiling below. Small cracks can be sealed; wide ones need a mason before the rain arrives.
- Who
- Mason
- Book
- 2–3 weeks ahead
-

Clean the water tank and service the pump
Silt gets into supply lines during the monsoon. A clean tank and a working float valve stop dirty water and dry taps.
- Typical cost
- Rs 1,500 – 2,500
- Who
- Plumber
-

Test earthing and outdoor wiring
Wet walls and loose outdoor connections are a shock risk. Have an electrician check the earthing, junction boxes and any outdoor sockets.
- Who
- Electrician
-

Protect wooden doors and frames
Doors swell and stick in the humidity. Plane anything already tight and seal exposed wood before it soaks up moisture.
- Who
- Carpenter
-

Pest-proof before insects move in
Damp brings termites, cockroaches and mosquitoes indoors. Treat drains and wood early; it is cheaper than treating an infestation.
- Who
- Pest control
-

Treat damp-prone walls
If a wall showed damp last year, it will again. A waterproof primer or damp treatment before repainting saves doing the job twice.
- Who
- Painter
A blocked roof drain costs very little to clear in the dry season. After a storm, the same drain can mean a damp ceiling and a repaint.
